The race was first to run in 1968 when a horse named Balustrade won. The horse was trained by Morris H. Dixon and ridden by Eric Walsh. In 1969, a horse named Al Hattab trained by Warren CrollJr won the event. The winning jockey was Ray Broussard. A year later, in 1970, Twice Worthy stood victorious. James Conway trained the horse, and the winning jockey was John Ruane.
